Eratosthenes of Cyrene is widely regarded as the Father of Geography and he is the first person to have used the word Geography (Geographika). He was a mathematician and astronomer from the ancient Greece.

On the other hand, Carl Ritter (1779–1859) is considered the father of modern geography. He was a German geographer and he occupied the first chair of geography at Berlin University. Along with Alexander von Humboldt, he is considered one of the founders of modern geography.
