Chloroform preparation ?

Chloroform can be prepared by the reaction of acetone with sodium hypochlorite (bleach) in the presence of a base such as sodium hydroxide. Here is a simple method for preparing chloroform:

1. Mix 10 mL of acetone with 10 mL of sodium hypochlorite (bleach) in a glass container.

2. Add a few drops of sodium hydroxide solution to the mixture to act as a catalyst.

4. The chloroform will separate as a layer on top of the mixture. Carefully decant the chloroform layer into a separate container.

5. To purify the chloroform, wash it with water to remove any impurities. Then, dry the chloroform by adding a small amount of anhydrous calcium chloride and allowing it to sit for a few hours.

6. Finally, distill the chloroform to remove any remaining impurities and obtain pure chloroform.
