The cornea is the transparent, dome-shaped outermost layer of the eye that covers the iris, pupil, and anterior chamber. It plays a crucial role in focusing light onto the retina, allowing us to see clearly. The cornea consists of several distinct parts:

1. Epithelium: The outermost layer of the cornea is called the epithelium. It is a thin, transparent layer composed of tightly packed cells that protect the cornea from damage and infection.

2. Bowman's Layer: Beneath the epithelium is Bowman's layer, which is a thin, acellular layer made up of collagen fibers. It provides structural support to the cornea.

3. Stroma: The stroma is the thickest layer of the cornea, accounting for about 90% of its thickness. It is composed of collagen fibers arranged in a highly organized manner, giving the cornea its strength and transparency.

4. Descemet's Membrane: Below the stroma is Descemet's membrane, a thin, transparent layer that acts as a barrier against the invasion of foreign substances and helps maintain the shape of the cornea.

5. Endothelium: The innermost layer of the cornea is the endothelium. It is a single layer of cells that regulate the fluid balance within the cornea, ensuring that it remains clear and transparent.

These different layers work together to maintain the cornea's transparency and shape, allowing light to pass through and focus properly on the retina for clear vision.
