(a) Causes: HIV is caused by the human immunodeficiency virus, which attacks the immune system and weakens the body's ability to fight off infections. It is primarily spread through contact with certain body fluids, such as blood, semen, vaginal fluids, and breast milk.

(b) Ways of transmission: HIV can be transmitted through unprotected sexual contact with an infected person, sharing needles or syringes with an infected person, from mother to child during childbirth or breastfeeding, and through blood transfusions or organ transplants from infected donors.

(c) Risk factors: Some of the risk factors for HIV include engaging in unprotected sex, having multiple sexual partners, sharing needles or syringes, having a sexually transmitted infection, and receiving blood transfusions or organ transplants from infected donors.

(d) Effects: HIV can lead to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), which is a more advanced stage of the disease. AIDS weakens the immune system even further, making individuals more susceptible to opportunistic infections and certain types of cancers. Without treatment, HIV can be life-threatening.

(e) Prevention and controls: Prevention measures for HIV include practicing safe sex by using condoms, avoiding sharing needles or syringes, getting tested and knowing your partner's HIV status, and taking pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for individuals at high risk. Treatment for HIV includes antiretroviral therapy (ART), which can help control the virus and prevent the progression to AIDS. Additionally, education and awareness campaigns can help reduce stigma and discrimination against individuals living with HIV/AIDS.
