What is a magnet ?

A magnet is an object that produces a magnetic field, which attracts certain materials such as iron, nickel, and cobalt. Magnets have two poles, known as the north pole and the south pole, and like poles repel each other while opposite poles attract each other. Magnets can be natural, such as lodestone, or man-made, such as permanent magnets or electromagnets. Magnets are used in a wide range of applications, including compasses, MRI machines, and electric motors.
