Which is the oldest fossil and in what type do they occur?

The oldest fossils are stromatolites, which are formed by the layered growth of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) in shallow water environments. Stromatolites date back to around 3.5 billion years ago and are some of the earliest evidence of life on Earth.
